Butoh Dance Performance

The Presage of The Phoenix

“”The Presage of the Phoenix” is ninety minutes of theater and butoh dance born from the research of choreographer Damiano Fina and the sound of Giuseppe Dal Bianco -writes Davide Fiore in Il Giornale di Vicenza- Fina’s show is the ritual of the continuous rebirth of the mythical bird, dance is language that uninterruptedly embodies the need to communicate, and mix geographically distant cultural contaminations, without the need for specific translations. Today, as in the past, it is possible to use this expressive tool to explore issues of gender, which enter into everyday thought and politics.”

On October 6, 2017, Damiano Fina and Giuseppe Dal Bianco presented their new show The Presage of The Phoenix for the first time on the stage of Schio’s Teatro Civico. Four acts of twenty minutes each recover the alchemical imagery of antiquity to create a ritual of renewal and rebirth. Dance and music evoke the mythological image phoenix: ancient fiery bird capable of continuous rebirth from its ashes, a symbol of immortality and wisdom.

The first act of the project was presented on July 2, 2016 in a version adapted for the striking Loggia del Capitaniato in Vicenza’s Piazza dei Signori, a Palladian monument that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is how the press titled some articles about the performance: “Butoh, subversive dance for our Presagio”; “The East of Butoh mysticism on Dal Bianco’s spiritual sound”; “Phoenix metamorphosis of Butoh dance by Damiano Fina.”
